Geertgen Tot Sint Jans - Music

Music

In his Glorification of Mary, the figures of Maria with her baby are surrounded by three circles of halo. Within the halo are all sorts of musical instruments. This painting shows some of the oldest pictures of musical instruments known in the Netherlands. The baby Jesus is playing with a pair of bells, and seems to be playing music with an angel in the outermost halo, holding an identical set of bells:

  • Detail of bell-playing angel in lower left.

  • Maria seems to be humming along, as the baby Jesus actively plays music (click 3x for detail view).

  • Image of a medieval Bassoon on the lower right.

Famous quotes containing the word music:

I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you’ll go after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.... Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.
    Harper Lee (b. 1926)

This music crept by me upon the waters,
Allaying both their fury and my passion
With its sweet air; thence have I followed it,
Or it hath drawn me rather.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

I fear I agree with your friend in not liking all sermons. Some of them, one has to confess, are rubbish: but then I release my attention from the preacher, and go ahead in any line of thought he may have started: and his after-eloquence acts as a kind of accompaniment—like music while one is reading poetry, which often, to me, adds to the effect.
Lewis Carroll [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson] (1832–1898)
