Gareth Southgate - Other Roles

Other Roles

During the 2003–04 season he became an author, penning Woody & Nord: A Football Friendship with close friend and former West Ham goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman. This book describes an enduring friendship forged in the Crystal Palace youth team that has survived Southgate and Woodman's wildly differing fortunes in the professional game. The book won the Best Autobiography category of the 2004 British Sports Book Awards, and the Sporting Book of the Year Award for 2004 from the National Sporting Club. In 2005, Southgate became a published poet, with a contribution to the collection Roary & Friends.

Southgate was also a co-commentator for ITV at the 2006 World Cup, covering group games alongside Clive Tyldesley. His appointment as Middlesbrough manager two days before the start of the tournament meant that he left Germany before the knockout phase commenced, with David Pleat replacing him as Tyldesley's co-commentator. He resumed a role as pundit and co-commentator after he finished his tenure at Middlesbrough in 2010 commentating on FA Cup and UEFA Champions League matches for ITV as well as acting as a pundit on England games. Southgate has also appeared on media outlets Sky Sports, Setanta Sports and BBC television and radio.

In January 2011, Southgate was confirmed as the FA's head of elite development, working alongside Sir Trevor Brooking.

In July 2012, Southgate decided to leave his role as Head of Elite Development for the FA. On the same day it was confirmed that he would not be considered for the role of Technical Director at the FA.

Famous quotes containing the word roles:

A concern with parenting...must direct attention beyond behavior. This is because parenting is not simply a set of behaviors, but participation in an interpersonal, diffuse, affective relationship. Parenting is an eminently psychological role in a way that many other roles and activities are not.
    Nancy Chodorow (20th century)
