Gadjah Mada University - History

History

When founded, UGM had 6 faculties: the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy, the Faculty of Law, Social and Political Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Letters, Pedagogy and Philosophy, the Faculty of Agriculture, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

From 1952 until 1972 the Faculty of Medicine was split into two separate faculties, the Surabaya branch of the Faculty of Law, Social, and Political Sciences was established, and the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training was integrated into IKIP Yogyakarta (now Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY)).

During its initial years, the University used the buildings and other facilities belonging to the Kraton of Yogyakarta (Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX's palace). The university gradually established a campus of its own in Bulaksumur on the northern side of Yogyakarta. The university now occupies an area of 3 square kilometres.

The current Rector of the University is Professor Pratikno, professor of political and social science, elected on 22 March 2012 for a period of five years until 2017.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Well, for us, in history where goodness is a rare pearl, he who was good almost takes precedence over he who was great.
    Victor Hugo (1802–1885)

The history of any nation follows an undulatory course. In the trough of the wave we find more or less complete anarchy; but the crest is not more or less complete Utopia, but only, at best, a tolerably humane, partially free and fairly just society that invariably carries within itself the seeds of its own decadence.
    Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)

A great proportion of the inhabitants of the Cape are always thus abroad about their teaming on some ocean highway or other, and the history of one of their ordinary trips would cast the Argonautic expedition into the shade.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
