Fujisawa Station - History

History

Fujisawa Station was opened on July 11, 1887 for both passenger and freight service as part of the section of the Japan National Railway (JNR) Tōkaidō Main Line connecting Yokohama with Kōzu. The adjacent Enoshima Electric Railway station opened on September 1, 1902 and the Odakyu Enoshima Line station on April 1, 1929. With the completion of the Shonan Freight Depot (湘南貨物駅, Shonan Kamotsu eki?) in between Fujisawa and Ofuna on October 1, 1960, freight services to Fujisawa were discontinued. Between 1974 and 1977, the station building was extensively remodeled to facilitate connections between the separate train lines, and in 1980 additional overpasses were built between platforms. In 1985, small parcel operations were discontinued. With the dissolution and privatization of the JNR on April 1, 1987, the station came under the operational control of the East Japan Railway Company. Automated turnstiles using the Suica IC Card system were installed from 2001.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

What we call National-Socialism is the poisonous perversion of ideas which have a long history in German intellectual life.
    Thomas Mann (1875–1955)

I assure you that in our next class we will concern ourselves solely with the history of Egypt, and not with the more lurid and non-curricular subject of living mummies.
Griffin Jay, and Reginald LeBorg. Prof. Norman (Frank Reicher)

When we of the so-called better classes are scared as men were never scared in history at material ugliness and hardship; when we put off marriage until our house can be artistic, and quake at the thought of having a child without a bank-account and doomed to manual labor, it is time for thinking men to protest against so unmanly and irreligious a state of opinion.
    William James (1842–1910)
