The Fringe War is a fictional ongoing conflict in Larry Niven's Ringworld series. The conflict takes place in the novels The Ringworld Throne, Ringworld's Children, and (with Edward M. Lerner) Fate of Worlds.
Once the existence of the Ringworld is revealed to the Human and Kzinti governments, both factions attempt to invade the Ringworld in order to acquire its advanced technology, and possibly also to colonize its vast amounts of land. The Ringworld is defended by a loose alliance of native Protectors, each from one of the major Hominid species of the Ringworld. Their main defense is a massive laser powered by artificial solar flares, capable of vaporizing an asteroid at distances of light-hours.
In Fate of Worlds, the Fringe War moves to the Fleet of Worlds.

Famous quotes containing the words fringe and/or war:
“A lake is the landscapes most beautiful and expressive feature. It is earths eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature. The fluviatile trees next the shore are the slender eyelashes which fringe it, and the wooded hills and cliffs around are its overhanging brows.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“What would you do in my position? Would you drop the war where it is? Or, would you prosecute it in future, with elderstalk squirts, charged with rose water?”
—Abraham Lincoln (18091865)
