The Fresnel Diffraction Integral
The electric field diffraction pattern at a point (x,y,z) is given by:
where
- is the aperture,
- , and
- is the imaginary unit.
Analytical solution of this integral is impossible for all but the simplest diffraction geometries. Therefore, it is usually calculated numerically.

“Make the most of your regrets; never smother your sorrow, but tend and cherish it till it come to have a separate and integral interest. To regret deeply is to live afresh.”
