Potente was in a romantic relationship with director Tom Tykwer from 1998 until January 2003. In 2008, she was engaged to an American businessman; however, in September 2009, the couple separated and the engagement was called off. In April 2011, she gave birth to a daughter. In summer 2012 she secretly married American actor Derek Richardson. Potente briefly dated Eric Melvin, guitarist for punk band NOFX.
Franka Potente is often thought to have played the title role in Pope Joan in 2009, but it was her colleague Johanna Wokalek who actually adopted that role.
