Francis S. It is approximately 80 miles (130 km) east of New York City.

Known as Suffolk County Air Force Base until 1969, then Suffolk County Air National Guard Base until 1991, when it was renamed in honor of Colonel Francis S. Today, the airport is used by the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing (106 RQW), an Air Combat Command (ACC)-gained unit.

The airport's collocated civil operations operate at Francis S. Gabreski Airport.
