Famous quotes containing the word africa:

“Day by day we hear the cry of AFRICA FOR THE AFRICANS. This cry has become a positive, determined one. It is a cry that is raised simultaneously the world over because of the universal oppression that affects the Negro.”
    —Marcus Garvey (1887–1940)

    “What is Africa to me:
    Copper sun or scarlet sea,
    Jungle star or jungle track,
Strong bronzed men, or regal black
Women from whose loins I sprang
When the birds of Eden sang?”
    —Countee Cullen (1903–1946)

“I have a fair amount of faith that women won’t sit back and allow South Africa to become a totally male-dominated new society. The women in South Africa have shown that they are strong, and I think they will make their voices heard.”
    —Paula Hathorn (b. c. 1962)
