Natural Environment
The foothills provide greenbelts and contain Open Space Preserves and Regional parks. The hills are part of Southern California’s Mediterranean climate California chaparral and woodlands ecoregion with the montane chaparral and woodlands and s habitats. Their chaparral, grassland, and oak woodland plant communities evolved with wildfires, with some species of their native plants dependent on natural fires to regenerate and thrive.

Famous quotes containing the words natural and/or environment:
“If, in looking at the lives of princes, courtiers, men of rank and fashion, we must perforce depict them as idle, profligate, and criminal, we must make allowances for the rich mens failings, and recollect that we, too, were very likely indolent and voluptuous, had we no motive for work, a mortals natural taste for pleasure, and the daily temptation of a large income. What could a great peer, with a great castle and park, and a great fortune, do but be splendid and idle?”
—William Makepeace Thackeray (18111863)
“In a land which is fully settled, most men must accept their local environment or try to change it by political means; only the exceptionally gifted or adventurous can leave to seek his fortune elsewhere. In America, on the other hand, to move on and make a fresh start somewhere else is still the normal reaction to dissatisfaction and failure.”
—W.H. (Wystan Hugh)
