It immediately found itself in competition with cricket which had established earlier popular roots in the island. This may have been partly due to the climate, which suited cricket better.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“If usually the present age is no very long time, still, at our pleasure, or in the service of some such unity of meaning as the history of civilization, or the study of geology, may suggest, we may conceive the present as extending over many centuries, or over a hundred thousand years.”
—Josiah Royce (18551916)
“A poets object is not to tell what actually happened but what could or would happen either probably or inevitably.... For this reason poetry is something more scientific and serious than history, because poetry tends to give general truths while history gives particular facts.”
—Aristotle (384323 B.C.)
“The history of a soldiers wound beguiles the pain of it.”
—Laurence Sterne (17131768)
