Construction was funded in 1971, and after five years of delays, it was completed in 1980.
The Expressway was converted to open road tolling on July 17, 2010, with all tolls collected electronically. Prior to this, tolls were not collected on the Snapper Creek Expressway despite the use of a variation of the toll shield for many years prior.
