Symbolism and Design

The nine horizontal stripes (light blue and white)on the flag represents the nine original departments of Uruguay, the first flag that appeared in 1828 had 9 light blue stripes, its number was reduced to 4 in 1830 before the proclamation of the country's first Constitution. The sun represents a new nation in the world, the flag's design is a combination of the Argentine flag and the flag of the United States.
