Famous quotes containing the words american, red and/or cross:
“The new American finds his challenge and his love in the traffic-choked streets, skies nested in smog, choking with the acids of industry, the screech of rubber and houses leashed in against one another while the townlets wither a time and die.”
—John Steinbeck (19021968)
“Every one of my friends had a bad day somewhere in her history she wished she could forget but couldnt. A very bad mother day changes you forever. Those were the hardest stories to tell. . . . I could still see the red imprint of his little bum when I changed his diaper that night. I stared at my hand, as if they were alien parts of myself . . . as if they had betrayed me. From that day on, I never hit him again.”
—Mary Kay Blakely (20th century)
“Although its growth may seem to have been slow, it is to be remembered that it is not a shrub, or plant, to shoot up in the summer and wither in the frosts. The Red Cross is a part of usit has come to stayand like the sturdy oak, its spreading branches shall yet encompass and shelter the relief of the nation.”
—Clara Barton (18211912)
