Fernando Buesa Arena - History

History

Originally designed (rather belatedly) as a cattle market in the mid 1970s, for a city that had already abandoned its links with agriculture and was modernizing at a great pace, it was soon turned into a sports arena, which opened in 1991.

It was formerly known as Pabellón Araba until 2000, when the arena is named Fernando Buesa, a Spanish politician who was assassinated by ETA.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

    I saw the Arab map.
It resembled a mare shuffling on,
    dragging its history like saddlebags,
nearing its tomb and the pitch of hell.
Adonis [Ali Ahmed Said] (b. 1930)

The visual is sorely undervalued in modern scholarship. Art history has attained only a fraction of the conceptual sophistication of literary criticism.... Drunk with self-love, criticism has hugely overestimated the centrality of language to western culture. It has failed to see the electrifying sign language of images.
    Camille Paglia (b. 1947)

English history is all about men liking their fathers, and American history is all about men hating their fathers and trying to burn down everything they ever did.
    Malcolm Bradbury (b. 1932)
