Female Figures in The Quran - Mother and Sister of Moses

Mother and Sister of Moses

The Qur'an narrates that Mūsā is watched by his sister, refuses the milk of other nurses and is suckled by his own mother.

"And We revealed to Musa's mother, saying: "Give him suck, then when you fear for him, cast him into the river and do not fear nor grieve; surely We will bring him back to you and make him one of the apostles." And the heart of Musa's mother was empty she would have almost disclosed it had We not strengthened her heart so that she might be of the believers. And she said to his sister: "Follow him up. So she watched him from a distance while they did not perceive." — Qur'an, Sura 28 (Al-Qasas), ayat 7-11

Famous quotes containing the words mother and, mother, sister and/or moses:

The relationship between mother and professional has not been a partnership in which both work together on behalf of the child, in which the expert helps the mother achieve her own goals for her child. Instead, professionals often behave as if they alone are advocates for the child; as if they are the guardians of the child’s needs; as if the mother left to her own devices will surely damage the child and only the professional can rescue him.
    Elaine Heffner (20th century)

Sometimes my wife complains that she’s overwhelmed with work and just can’t take one of the kids, for example, to a piano lesson. I’ll offer to do it for her, and then she’ll say, “No, I’ll do it.” We have to negotiate how much I trespass into that mother role—it’s not given up easily.
—Anonymous Father. As quoted in Women and Their Fathers, by Victoria Secunda, ch. 3 (1992)

Surely a gentle sister is the second best gift to a man; and it is first in point of occurrence; for the wife comes after.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.
    Bible: Hebrew, Exodus 33:11.
