Feltham Railway Station - Facilities

Facilities

cameron elfpricks home.A footbridge in the station with lifts connects the platforms. There is a footbridge, beyond the level crossing at the west of the station for pedestrians to cross when the gates are closed and beyond that a more recent footbridge allows disabled accessed crossing by ramps and connects with the town's shopping centre.

There are a small shop, toilets, ticket machines and a small seating area in the booking hall before the main ticket barriers on Platform 1 (Eastbound or 'Up'). A small bus station adjoins the booking hall for services to London Heathrow Airport and neighbouring localities. On platform 1 there are covered waiting shelters, vending machines and a coffee kiosk.

The westbound, or 'Down', Platform 2, was the original entrance to the station. The Victorian former station house is in a local conservation area. The small station car park is also used for rail replacement bus services and courtesy buses to local employers. Before World War II a new main station entrance was built on the road bridge carrying Hounslow Road across the line but it and a footbridge connecting the two platforms were taken out of service in the early 1990s, that entrance is now bricked up. Other unused space in the original building includes the former Red Star parcels office. Platform 2 has automatic ticket machines, barriers with a side gate for access when the barriers are unmanned, a small shop, and covered seating.

While the present station was under construction in the 1990s, the original station was used with a temporary building in the car park area. The new station was built under the SWELTRAC partnership between local authorities, Heathrow Airport Ltd (part of BAA), and the rail industry which was intended to encourage use of public transport and to allow easy rail/bus interchanges. The new station is at the western extremity of New Road, Feltham, at the junction with Bedfont Lane, hard by the level crossing, as land to the north east on New Road, previously used for railway purposes, was occupied by a supermarket and a private sporting facility.

Famous quotes containing the word facilities:

I have always found that when men have exhausted their own resources, they fall back on “the intentions of the Creator.” But their platitudes have ceased to have any influence with those women who believe they have the same facilities for communication with the Divine mind as men have.
    Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815–1902)

Marriage is good enough for the lower classes: they have facilities for desertion that are denied to us.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)
