Fecal Incontinence - Symptoms

Symptoms

Symptoms of FI can be primary or secondary. Primary symptoms include a lack of control for different bowel contents, e.g. solid stool, liquid/semi-formed stool, gas, which tends to worsen over time. Since bowel contents have a physiological odor, uncontrolled odor may be the main concern of the patient, causing much social anxiety. Secondary symptoms, the result of leaking stool, include pruritus ani, perianal skin irritation, urinary tract infections. Due to embarrassment, patients may only complain of a secondary symptom rather than acknowledge any degree of FI. If there is an underlying cause of FI, this may give other symptoms which are superimposed on the symptoms above.

Famous quotes containing the word symptoms:

For anyone addicted to reading commonplace books ... finding a good new one is much like enduring a familiar recurrence of malaria, with fever, fits of shaking, strange dreams. Unlike a truly paludismic ordeal, however, the symptoms felt while savoring a collection of one man’s pet quotations are voluptuously enjoyable ...
    M.F.K. Fisher (1908–1992)

Murderous desire, hatred, distrust are nowadays the accompanying signs of physical illness: so thoroughly have we embodied our moral prejudices.—Perhaps cowardice and pity appear as symptoms of illness in savage ages. Perhaps even virtues might be symptoms.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

In retirement, only money and symptoms are consequential.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
