Family Circle Cup

The Family Circle Cup is a WTA Tour affiliated professional tennis tournament for women, held every year since 1973. It is the oldest professional women's tournament with a $750,000 purse. The tournament is currently played on the green clay courts at the Daniel Island Tennis Center in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. From its inception in 1973 to 2000, the tournament was held at the Sea Pines Plantation on Hilton Head Island with the exception of 1975 and 1976 when it was played on Amelia Island off the coast of Florida. It moved to Charleston in 2001. It is classified on the WTA Tour as a Premier tournament (before 2009: Tier I). It celebrated its 40th year in 2012 by naming the court in honor of Billie Jean King.

Famous quotes containing the words family, circle and/or cup:

The family environment in which your children are growing up is different from that in which you grew up. The decisions our parents made and the strategies they used were developed in a different context from what we face today, even if the “content” of the problem is the same. It is a mistake to think that our own experience as children and adolescents will give us all we need to help our children. The rules of the game have changed.
    Lawrence Kutner (20th century)

A beauty is not suddenly in a circle. It comes with rapture. A great deal of beauty is rapture. A circle is a necessity. Otherwise you would see no one. We each have our circle.
    Gertrude Stein (1874–1946)

I believe that water is the only drink for a wise man: wine is not so noble a liquor; and think of dashing the hopes of a morning with a cup of warm coffee, or of an evening with a dish of tea! Ah, how low I fall when I am tempted by them! Even music may be intoxicating. Such apparently slight causes destroyed Greece and Rome, and will destroy England and America.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
