Mars has only a thin atmosphere; however, it is extremely dusty and there is much light that is scattered about. The sky is thus rather bright during the daytime and stars are not visible. The Martian northern pole star is Deneb (although the actual pole is somewhat offset in the direction of Alpha Cephei).

    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

It makes us, or it mars us, think on that,
And fix most firm thy resolution.
