Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a non-invasive treatment of kidney stones (urinary calculosis) and biliary calculi (stones in the gallbladder or in the liver) using an acoustic pulse.
It is estimated that more than one million patients are treated annually with ESWL in the USA alone.

Famous quotes containing the words shock and/or wave:
“The pointless ferocities of intellectual life shock businessmen, who kill only to eat.”
—Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
“The city is loveliest when the sweet death racket begins. Her own life lived in defiance of nature, her electricity, her frigidaires, her soundproof walls, the glint of lacquered nails, the plumes that wave across the corrugated sky. Here in the coffin depths grow the everlasting flowers sent by telegraph.”
—Henry Miller (18911980)
