Other Extinct Species
Four species of birds that once bred on the Isle of Man have gone extinct locally, of these the Great Auk is extinct worldwide. Six species of non-breeding birds have not been recorded since before the 1950s and are considered as being locally extinct. N.B. None of these animals were solely native to the Isle of Man. Several other species of mammal, such as the Brown Bear, Wolf and Beaver may have once been present in Mann. However, no evidence has been found of their existence.

Famous quotes containing the words extinct and/or species:
“One realises, with horror, that the race of men is almost extinct in Europe. Only Christ-like heroes and woman-worshipping Don Juans, and rabid equality-mongrels. The old, hardy, indomitable male is gone.”
—D.H. (David Herbert)
“Books, gentlemen, are a species of men, and introduced to them you circulate in the very best society that this world can furnish, without the intolerable infliction of dressing to go into it. In your shabbiest coat and cosiest slippers you may socially chat even with the fastidious Earl of Chesterfield, and lounging under a tree enjoy the divinest intimacy with my late lord of Verulam.”
—Herman Melville (18191891)
