Research
Birney has contributed to several bioinformatics and computational biology projects including the Pfam database, InterPro, BioPerl and HMMER toolkits. Most recently Birney is known for his role in the ENCODE consortium. His research has been funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the Wellcome Trust and the European Union.
His research group currently focuses on genomic algorithms and studying inter individual differences, in both human and other species.
