Famous quotes containing the words north america, hermes, north and/or america:

The English were very backward to explore and settle the continent which they had stumbled upon. The French preceded them both in their attempts to colonize the continent of North America ... and in their first permanent settlement ... And the right of possession, naturally enough, was the one which England mainly respected and recognized in the case of Spain, of Portugal, and also of France, from the time of Henry VII.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    Antiquity breached mortality with myths.
    Narcissus is vocabulary. Hermes decorates
A cornice on the Third National Bank.
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)

The pure products of America go crazy—mountain folk from Kentucky or the ribbed north end of Jersey with its isolate lakes and valleys, its deaf-mutes, thieves.
    William Carlos Williams (1883–1963)

Not only because those ways were not like ours, but because they simply did not work.
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
