Famous quotes containing the word history:

The one duty we owe to history is to rewrite it.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)

It’s a very delicate surgical operation—to cut out the heart without killing the patient. The history of our country, however, is a very tough old patient, and we’ll do the best we can.
Dudley Nichols, U.S. screenwriter. Jean Renoir. Sorel (Philip Merivale)

They gratify their own interest; but something further is thereby accomplished, latent in the actions in question, though not present to their consciousness, and not included in their design.
    Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831)
