Second World War
From 10 November 1942 during the Second World War it was home to No. 57 OTU RAF. Training on Spitfires was carried out there until the unit was transferred north to RAF Boulmer in August 1944.

The line “their name liveth for evermore” was chosen by Rudyard Kipling on behalf of the Imperial War Graves Commission as an epitaph to be used in Commonwealth War Cemeteries. Kipling had himself lost a son in the fighting.
