Escort Fighter - Modern Era

Modern Era

The advent of the air superiority fighter, such as the F-15 Eagle, meant that bombers and attack aircraft would be protected by fighters flying far afield and ahead of them, engaging distant enemy air units, rather than by direct escorts staying in sight nearby.

The concept of multirole fighter, such as F/A-18, also decreased the need for escorts, as the aircraft on air strike mission became capable of effective self-defense.

Famous quotes containing the words modern and/or era:

By bourgeoisie is meant the class of modern capitalists, owners of the means of social production and employers of wage labor. By proletariat, the class of modern wage laborers who, having no means of production of their own, are reduced to selling their labor power in order to live.
    Friedrich Engels (1820–1895)

... most Southerners of my parents’ era were raised to feel that it wasn’t respectable to be rich. We felt that all patriotic Southerners had lost everything in defense of the South, and sufficient time hadn’t elapsed for respectable rebuilding of financial security in a war- impoverished region.
Sarah Patton Boyle, U.S. civil rights activist and author. The Desegregated Heart, part 1, ch. 1 (1962)
