Replete with different dialects, Esan language is quite intelligible to most native speakers of various dialcts. There are however variations in the vocabularies among the various dialects but the grammar and basic linguistic architechtonics of the Esan language among the various dialects are basically the same. Irrua version of Esan language, which is also spoken in Ewu, is generally adopted as the Central Esan and used in education whereas Uromi City is generally accepted as the Headquarters of Esanland. The Onogie of Irrua, also known as the Okaijiesan (The First among the Kings)of Esanland is generally accepted as the Had of the Kings of Esanland. This title, Okaijiesan was created by the Oba of Benin, when the Benin Empire was controlling Esanland.
