. . . Performances At Englert Theatre -- Both Then and Now
During its historic commercial years, vaudeville acts on national tours made regular stops at Englert Theatre, providing a principal source of local public entertainment. The Englert stage was graced by such "old time" notables as Ethel Barrymore, Ed Wynn, Lynn Fontanne, and golden-throated Sarah Bernhardt, touted during her era as "the greatest actress of all time."
Since its re-opening as a civic venture in the modern era, tireless efforts to keep the refurbished facility fully employed included an important initial core use through a 2004 agreement with the University of Iowa for its use during as many as 40 nights each year. The Englert currently typically provides live events during more than 225 nights annually. Varied volunteer opportunities always are available.
As a legitimate playhouse during this current civic reincarnation, the Englert also has hosted widely heralded groups and performers such as The Second City, Paula Poundstone, New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Greg Brown, and many others. The theater also is the primary venue for Landlocked Film Festival.

Famous quotes containing the words performances and/or theatre:
“This play holds the seasons record [for early closing], thus far, with a run of four evening performances and one matinee. By an odd coincidence it ran just five performances too many.”
—Dorothy Parker (18931967)
“Compare ... the cinema with theatre. Both are dramatic arts. Theatre brings actors before a public and every night during the season they re-enact the same drama. Deep in the nature of theatre is a sense of ritual. The cinema, by contrast, transports its audience individually, singly, out of the theatre towards the unknown.”
—John Berger (b. 1926)
