Spike Aloysius Lavery is a fictional character from the daytime drama All My Children. He is the son of Kendall Hart Slater and Ryan Lavery. Spike is the second grandchild of Erica Kane and her first grandson. His siblings are Emma Lavery, Ian Slater and Sara Lavery. Child actresses Ava and Julia Farrar shared the role of Spike Lavery with other babies starting August 2, 2006. They took over the entire role of Spike Lavery from October 2, 2006 until June 28, 2007. Alexander, Benjamin and Caleb Eckstein played the role from July 16, 2007 until December 2009. Jake T. Vaughn took over the role in April 2010 until the show's cancellation in 2011.

Spike Lavery is conceived in September 2005 through in vitro and is supposed to be the child of Ryan Lavery and Greenlee Smythe, but surrogate mother Kendall Hart is forced to use her own egg after Greenlee's eggs are damaged in a power outage. When Greenlee discovers the baby is not hers, she leaves town. Kendall leaves town to have her baby, where her ex-husband Zach Slater finds her and they reconcile. They remarry and return to Pine Valley. Kendall is in an accident caused by JR Chandler, and goes into a coma. Premature baby Spike is born on May 31, 2006 by caesarean section.

Zach and Kendall have primary custody of Spike, with Ryan having visitation. When Spike is older, he is in a car accident involving Greenlee, which is at the time is thought to be the cause of his deafness. It is later revealed that Spike's hearing loss is the result of a chromosomal abnormality, not the car accident, when Spike goes to have Cochlear implant surgery.

Famous quotes containing the word spike:

Directors like Satyajit Ray, Rossellini, Bresson, Buñuel, Forman, Scorsese, and Spike Lee have used non-professional actors precisely in order that the people we see on the screen may be scarcely more explained than reality itself. Professionals, except fo the greatest, usually play not just the necessary role, but an explanation of the role.
    John Berger (b. 1926)
