The Embassy of the United States in Tokyo represents the United States to Japan. Along with consulates in Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, Fukuoka, and Naha, the embassy provides assistance to American citizens and residents who live in Japan and issues visas to foreign nationals, who are Japanese and legal residents in Japan, who wish to visit or immigrate to the United States.
The current U.S. Ambassador to Japan is John V. Roos, the former CEO of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and one of Barack Obama's top fundraisers during his presidential campaign. He presented his credentials to the Emperor of Japan on August 20, 2009.
James P. Zumwalt serves as the Deputy Chief of Mission of US Embassy in Japan. He had been the Chargés d’affaires ad interim during the absence of the Ambassador from January 15, 2009 till August 20, 2009.
The current embassy building was designed by Norma Merrick Sklarek and completed in 1976.
