Electoral Systems of The Australian States and Territories - Northern Territory

Northern Territory

The Northern Territory Legislative Assembly has 25 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member constituencies under the same full preferential form of the Alternative Vote used for the House of Representatives. The Territory has never had an upper house. Nomination as a candidate requires one of the following:

  • Must be over 18 years of age
  • Nomination by six electors; or
  • Nomination by the Registered Officer of a political party (registration of a party requires 200 members).
  • Deposit of $200. The deposit is returned if the candidate gains 20% of first preference vote.

Famous quotes containing the words northern and/or territory:

The note of the white-throated sparrow, a very inspiriting but almost wiry sound, was first heard in the morning, and with this all the woods rang. This was the prevailing bird in the northern part of Maine. The forest generally was alive with them at this season, and they were proportionally numerous and musical about Bangor. They evidently breed in that State.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

A Country is not a mere territory; the particular territory is only its foundation. The Country is the idea which rises upon that foundation; it is the sentiment of love, the sense of fellowship which binds together all the sons of that territory.
    Giuseppe Mazzini (1805–1872)
