Croatia is expected to elect 12 members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in a by-election held after its accession to the EU. The by-election may be held at least six months prior to the scheduled 2014 European Parliament election—otherwise the 12 MEPs will be elected in the 2014 elections which are already planned to include Croatia. The elections are regulated by special legislation enacted by the Sabor. Provisions of the legislation are very similar to the parliamentary-election legislation, with the main difference being that the 12 members of the European Parliament are elected in a single constituency encompassing all of Croatia, instead of multiple constituencies used in the parliamentary elections.

Famous quotes containing the words european, parliament and/or elections:

Of course, in the reality of history, the Machiavellian view which glorifies the principle of violence has been able to dominate. Not the compromising conciliatory politics of humaneness, not the Erasmian, but rather the politics of vested power which firmly exploits every opportunity, politics in the sense of the “Principe,” has determined the development of European history ever since.
    Stefan Zweig (18811942)

What is the historical function of Parliament in this country? It is to prevent the Government from governing.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

Apparently, a democracy is a place where numerous elections are held at great cost without issues and with interchangeable candidates.
    Gore Vidal (b. 1925)
