Early Life and Education

Born in Rosh HaAyin, Cabel studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Whilst at university, he was the President of the Students' Union. Following his graduation he worked as an aide to Agriculture Minister Avraham Katz-Oz, Shimon Peres and Binyamin Ben-Eliezer.

He was first elected to the Knesset in 1996. In the past he has been the chairman of the Subcommittee for the Stock Market, and the Economic Affairs Committee. Currently he is a member of the House Committee, and the Foreign Affairs & Defense Committee. He is the chairman of the Lobby for the Promotion of Culture and Art in Israel. He is also a member of the Lobby for Reserve Soldiers, and Social-Environmental Lobby.

In 2007 he resigned his position as Minister without Portfolio, and told Ehud Olmert to resign as well. He said "I can no longer sit in a government headed by Ehud Olmert." He resigned after the Winograd Commission released a report blamed Olmert and other members of the Israeli government as being responsible for the failures of the Second Lebanon War.

Cabel retained his seat in the 2009 elections, having been placed seventh on the party's list.

Famous quotes containing the words early, life and/or education:

    Well, it’s early yet!
Robert Pirosh, U.S. screenwriter, George Seaton, George Oppenheimer, and Sam Wood. Dr. Hugo Z. Hackenbush (Groucho Marx)

What is there in life except one’s ideas,
Good air, good friend, what is there in life?
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

In this world, which is so plainly the antechamber of another, there are no happy men. The true division of humanity is between those who live in light and those who live in darkness. Our aim must be to diminish the number of the latter and increase the number of the former. That is why we demand education and knowledge.
    Victor Hugo (1802–1885)
