Eimeria - Host Range

Host Range

All mammalian coccidia are considered to be host-specific, but a limited number of exceptions to this rule have been identified.

Thirty-one species are known to occur in bats (Chiroptera) and two in turtles.

One-hundred and thirty named species infect fish.

Two species (E. phocae and E. weddelli) infect seals.

Five species infect llamas and alpacas - E. alpacae, E. ivitaensis, E. lamae, E. macusaniensis and E. punonensis.

A number of species infect rodents, including E. couesii, E. kinsellai, E. palustris, E. ojastii and E. oryzomysi.

Others infect poultry (E. necatrix and E. tenella), rabbits (E. stiedae) and cattle (E. bovis, E. ellipsoidalis and E. zuernii).

Famous quotes containing the words host and/or range:

Carlyle’s works, it is true, have not the stereotyped success which we call classic. They are a rich but inexpensive entertainment, at which we are not concerned lest the host has strained or impoverished himself to feed his guests. It is not the most lasting word, nor the loftiest wisdom, but rather the word which comes last.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

A girl must allow others to share the responsibility for care, thus enabling others to care for her. She must learn how to care in ways appropriate to her age, her desires, and her needs; she then acts with authenticity. She must be allowed the freedom not to care; she then has access to a wide range of feelings and is able to care more fully.
    Jeanne Elium (20th century)
