Edwin Samuel Montagu - Family

Family

Montagu married the Hon. Venetia Stanley, daughter of Edward Stanley, 4th Baron Stanley of Alderley, in 1915. She converted to Judaism upon her marriage. It is suggested in a recent publication (Conspiracy of Secrets) that the marriage was one of social convenience to cover both Montagu's homosexuality and Venetia's earlier affair with prime minister H.H. Asquith with whom she had an illegitimate child. (Louis T Stanley). Venetia's daughter, Judith, born while she was married to Montagu, was not his but the Earl of Dudley. Judith married the American art historian Milton Gendel. The grand-daughter Anna Gendel is a god-daughter of Princess Margaret.

Montagu died in November 1924 at the age of 45. His wife died in August 1948, aged 60.

Famous quotes containing the word family:

A poem is like a person. Though it has a family tree, it is important not because of its ancestors but because of its individuality. The poem, like any human being, is something more than its most complete analysis. Like any human being, it gives a sense of unified individuality which no summary of its qualities can reproduce; and at the same time a sense of variety which is beyond satisfactory final analysis.
    Donald Stauffer (b. 1930)

The life-fate of the modern individual depends not only upon the family into which he was born or which he enters by marriage, but increasingly upon the corporation in which he spends the most alert hours of his best years.
    C. Wright Mills (1916–1962)

Like many another romance, the romance of the family turns sour when the money runs out. If we really cared about families, we would not let “born again” patriarchs send up moral abstractions as a smokescreen for the scandal of American family economics.
    Letty Cottin Pogrebin (20th century)
