East Zenati is a proposed subgroup of the Zenati languages of Tunisia and Libya.
Ethnologue 16 includes the following three languages:
- Ghadames
- Nafusi (in the Nafusa Mountains)
- Sened (extinct)
Kossman (1999) considers Ghadames and Nafusi to lie in separate branches of Berber; they are frequently grouped together as Eastern Berber.
Blench (2006) excludes Ghadames. He considers East Zanati to be a dialect cluster, consisting of the following varieties:
- Tmagurt & Sened
- Jerba (Djerbi)
- Tamezret & Taujjut (Matmata)
- Nafusi
- Zuwara
Famous quotes containing the words east and/or languages:
“Though the words Canada East on the map stretch over many rivers and lakes and unexplored wildernesses, the actual Canada, which might be the colored portion of the map, is but a little clearing on the banks of the river, which one of those syllables would more than cover.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“People in places many of us never heard of, whose names we cant pronounce or even spell, are speaking up for themselves. They speak in languages we once classified as exotic but whose mastery is now essential for our diplomats and businessmen. But what they say is very much the same the world over. They want a decent standard of living. They want human dignity and a voice in their own futures. They want their children to grow up strong and healthy and free.”
—Hubert H. Humphrey (19111978)
