East Wickham - History

History

Welling originally formed part of the ancient manor of East Wickham, which was centred on St Michael’s Church, Upper Wickham Lane, built in the 13th century. In the Domesday Book (1086) East Wickham was included as part of the return for Plumstead and the church was originally a chapel of St Nicholas’ Church in Plumstead. East Wickham is the birthplace and childhood residence of the singer-songwriter Kate Bush.

    Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831)

Boys forget what their country means by just reading “the land of the free” in history books. Then they get to be men, they forget even more. Liberty’s too precious a thing to be buried in books.
