“Many a woman shudders ... at the terrible eclipse of those intellectual powers which in early life seemed prophetic of usefulness and happiness, hence the army of martyrs among our married and unmarried women who, not having cultivated a taste for science, art or literature, form a corps of nervous patients who make fortunes for agreeable physicians ...”

“On the Coast of Coromandel
Where the early pumpkins blow,
In the middle of the woods
Lived the Yonghy-Bonghy-Bo.
Two old chairs, and half a candle,
One old jug without a handle,
These were all his worldly goods:
In the middle of the woods,”
—Edward Lear (18121888)
“When Learnings Triumph oer her barbrous Foes
First reard the Stage, immortal Shakespear rose;
Each Change of many-colourd Life he drew,
Exhausted Worlds, and then imagind new:”
—Samuel Johnson (17091784)
