Duleep Singh - Family

Family

Dalip's mother, Maharani Jind Kaur, was in exile in Nepal. In 1860 he was allowed to return to India and he decided to bring his mother back to England. She died in England in 1863.

Dalip Singh married twice, first to Bamba Müller and then to Ada Douglas Wetherill. He had eight children in total, six from his first marriage to Bamba:

  • Prince Victor Duleep Singh
  • Prince Frederick Duleep Singh
  • Prince Albert Edward Duleep Singh
  • Princess Bamba Duleep Singh
  • Princess Catherine Duleep Singh
  • Princess Sophia Duleep Singh

He also had two children from his second marriage to Ada Douglas Wetherill:

  • Princess Pauline Alexandra Duleep Singh
  • Princess Ada Irene Beryl Duleep Singh

All the eight children died without legitimate issue, ending the direct line of the Sikh Royalty.

There is a memorial at Eton College in England to Princes Victor and Frederick, Maharajah Duleep Singh's two sons who studied at Eton in the 1870s.

Famous quotes containing the word family:

I worry about people who get born nowadays, because they get born into such tiny families—sometimes into no family at all. When you’re the only pea in the pod, your parents are likely to get you confused with the Hope Diamond. And that encourages you to talk too much.
    Russell Baker (b. 1925)

The son will run away from the family not at eighteen but at twelve, emancipated by his gluttonous precocity; he will fly not to seek heroic adventures, not to deliver a beautiful prisoner from a tower, not to immortalize a garret with sublime thoughts, but to found a business, to enrich himself and to compete with his infamous papa.
    Charles Baudelaire (1821–67)

Children need money. As they grow older they need more money. They need money for essentially the same reasons that adults need money. They need to buy stuff....They need it regardless of whether they get good grades, violate a family rule, or offend a parent.
    Donald C. Medeiros (20th century)
