Famous quotes containing the words dow, air, force and/or base:

    The woman was old and ragged and gray
    And bent with the chill of the Winter’s day.
    —Mary Dow Brine (1816–1913)

    Our air up here is good for the disease—I mean good against the disease,... but it is also good for the disease.
    Thomas Mann (1875–1955)

    It’s the old captain’s dark fate
    Who failed to find or force a strait
    In its two-thousand-mile coast;
    And his crew left him where he failed,
    And nothing came of all he sailed.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

    The base of all artistic genius is the power of conceiving humanity in a new, striking, rejoicing way, of putting a happy world of its own creation in place of the meaner world of common days, of generating around itself an atmosphere with a novel power of refraction, selecting, transforming, recombining the images it transmits, according to the choice of the imaginative intellect. In exercising this power, painting and poetry have a choice of subject almost unlimited.
    Walter Pater (1839–1894)
