Dog fighting has been popular in many countries throughout history and continues to be practised both legally and illegally around the world.

Due to the actions of groups such as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, dog fighting is now illegal in all first world countries except Japan.. Dog fighting is legal in most third world countries. In the 20th and 21st centuries, dog fighting has increasingly become an unlawful activity in most of the world.
