The first generation of the Avenger was exclusive to South Africa. The Avenger was a rebadged Hillman Avenger that used a Peugeot 1.6L engine in order to satisfy local rules. The Avenger was available from 1970 until its discontinuation in 1981. There was no known direct successor. Because it was exclusive to South Africa, this generation of the Avenger never reached North America or Europe, and, in its place, the Chrysler Avenger was sold. This generation differs greatly from the later Avengers and is commonly forgotten about.

Famous quotes containing the words south, african, dodge and/or avenger:
“Indeed, I believe that in the future, when we shall have seized again, as we will seize if we are true to ourselves, our own fair part of commerce upon the sea, and when we shall have again our appropriate share of South American trade, that these railroads from St. Louis, touching deep harbors on the gulf, and communicating there with lines of steamships, shall touch the ports of South America and bring their tribute to you.”
—Benjamin Harrison (18331901)
“All great religions, in order to escape absurdity, have to admit a dilution of agnosticism. It is only the savage, whether of the African bush or the American gospel tent, who pretends to know the will and intent of God exactly and completely.”
—H.L. (Henry Lewis)
“Im a very smart guy. I havent a feeling or a scruple in the world. All I have the itch for is money. I am so money greedy that for twenty-five bucks a day and expenses, mostly gasoline and whisky, I do my thinking myself, what there is of it; I risk my whole future, the hatred of the cops ... I dodge bullets and eat saps, and say thank you very much, if you have any more trouble, I hope youll think of me, Ill just leave one of my cards in case anything comes up.”
—Raymond Chandler (18881959)
“I must not only punish, but punish with impunity. A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong.”
—Edgar Allan Poe (18091849)
