The Doak Walker Award, first awarded in 1990, honors the United States's top college football running back. It is named after the Southern Methodist and Detroit Lions football player Doak Walker. The 2011 winner of the Doak Walker Award was Trent Richardson of Alabama Crimson Tide football.
The award requires all candidates to be:
- in good academic standing, and
- on schedule to graduate within one year of students in their eligibility classification.
The award recipient receives a sculpture of Doak Walker, cast in bronze and mounted on a wooden base. It was created by artist Blair Buswell, who has sculpted the busts of more than a dozen inductees in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
