Famous quotes containing the words response of the, response of, response, state and/or legislatures:

I am accustomed to think very long of going anywhere,—am slow to move. I hope to hear a response of the oracle first.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Eyes seeking the response of eyes
Bring out the stars, bring out the flowers,
    Thus concentrating earth and skies
So none need be afraid of size.
    All revelation has been ours.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

Because humans are not alone in exhibiting such behavior—bees stockpile royal jelly, birds feather their nests, mice shred paper—it’s possible that a pregnant woman who scrubs her house from floor to ceiling [just before her baby is born] is responding to a biological imperative . . . . Of course there are those who believe that . . . the burst of energy that propels a pregnant woman to clean her house is a perfectly natural response to their mother’s impending visit.
    Mary Arrigo (20th century)

Whoever can discern truth has received his commission from a higher source than the chiefest justice in the world who can discern only law. He finds himself constituted judge of the judge. Strange that it should be necessary to state such simple truths!
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Look not to legislatures and churches for your guidance, nor to any soulless incorporated bodies, but to inspirited or inspired ones.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
