Violence
Further information: East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalryViolence occasionally ensues from long-standing confrontation as a result of things said on record, most notably the shootings of 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. Often, diss tracks are thought to be serious threats against rappers, but with increasing media coverage, it is seen that sometimes diss tracks are meant solely for the promotion of the artists. Notable areas of territorial violence in California include Los Angeles, Compton and Oakland.
Other notable areas with a history of rap feuds include the "Dirty South", Chicago, Sacramento, Memphis, Detroit, Kansas City, and Houston.

Famous quotes containing the word violence:
“A man who lives with nature is used to violence and is companionable with death. There is more violence in an English hedgerow than in the meanest streets of a great city.”
—P.D. (Phyllis Dorothy)
“He thought of certain human hearts, their climb
Through violence into exquisite disciplines
Of which, as it now appeared, they all expired.”
—James Merrill (b. 1926)
“Violence upon the roads: violence of horses;
Some few have handsome riders, are garlanded
On delicate sensitive ear or tossing mane,
But wearied running round and round in their courses
All break and vanish, and evil gathers head:
Herodias daughters have returned again.”
—William Butler Yeats (18651939)
