Direct Election Republican Model (Australia)

Direct Election Republican Model (Australia)

A direct election republican model is a proposal for Australian constitutional reform. If proposal of this type is approved at a referendum, it would establish Australia as a republic with a Head of State chosen directly by the Australian electorate.

On face value, this definition describes a wide range of models, however when republicans express support for the direct-election model, support for a parliamentary system of government is usually implied. Such people are envisaging a reform where the Governor-General becomes a directly elected figurehead President and the Prime Minister remains the Head of Government.

Famous quotes containing the words direct, election, republican and/or model:

Authority and power are two different things: power is the force by means of which you can oblige others to obey you. Authority is the right to direct and command, to be listened to or obeyed by others. Authority requests power. Power without authority is tyranny.
    Jacques Maritain (1882–1973)

What a glorious time they must have in that wilderness, far from mankind and election day!
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The Republican party makes even its young men seem old; the Democratic Party makes even its old men seem young.
    Adlai Stevenson (1900–1965)

...that absolutely everything beloved and cherished of the bourgeoisie, the conservative, the cowardly, and the impotent—the State, family life, secular art and science—was consciously or unconsciously hostile to the religious idea, to the Church, whose innate tendency and permanent aim was the dissolution of all existing worldly orders, and the reconstitution of society after the model of the ideal, the communistic City of God.
    Thomas Mann (1875–1955)
