History
The department was created on 8 June 2001 upon the re-election of the Labour party into Government. It merged the Department of Social Security (DSS), The Employment Service and the policy groups of the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) that were involved in Employment policy and International issues, in addition to the Opportunity and Diversity group's responsibilities toward disability.
The department was initially tasked at its inception specifically with creating Jobcentre Plus and the Pensions service from the remains of the Employment service and the Benefits agency. The department is therefore responsible for welfare and pension policy. Its key aims are "to help its customers become financially independent and to help reduce child poverty."

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“The thing that struck me forcefully was the feeling of great age about the place. Standing on that old parade ground, which is now a cricket field, I could feel the dead generations crowding me. Here was the oldest settlement of freedmen in the Western world, no doubt. Men who had thrown off the bands of slavery by their own courage and ingenuity. The courage and daring of the Maroons strike like a purple beam across the history of Jamaica.”
—Zora Neale Hurston (18911960)
“One classic American landscape haunts all of American literature. It is a picture of Eden, perceived at the instant of history when corruption has just begun to set in. The serpent has shown his scaly head in the undergrowth. The apple gleams on the tree. The old drama of the Fall is ready to start all over again.”
—Jonathan Raban (b. 1942)
“America is the only nation in history which miraculously has gone directly from barbarism to degeneration without the usual interval of civilization.”
—Georges Clemenceau (18411929)
