Denis Healey - Personal Life

Personal Life

Healey married Edna May Edmunds on 21 December 1945; she died on 21 July 2010, aged 92. They were married for over 60 years and lived in Alfriston, East Sussex. In 1987 Edna underwent an operation at a private hospital — at odds with Healey's pro-NHS beliefs. Challenged by Anne Diamond on TV-am, Healey became upset and ended the interview. He then jabbed journalist Adam Boulton. The couple had three children, one of whom is the broadcaster, writer and record producer Tim Healey. Healey was a photographer for many years and enjoyed music and painting. He sometimes played popular piano tunes at public events. In a 2012 interview, Healey reported that he was swimming twenty lengths a day in his outdoor pool. He was missing his wife "very much indeed". The interviewer found him a charming and entertaining host.

Famous quotes containing the words personal and/or life:

    Samuel Sewall, in a world of wigs,
    Flouted opinion in his personal hair;
    For foppery he gave not any figs,
    But in his right and honor took the air.
    Anthony Hecht (b. 1923)

    Oh! what a poor thing is human life in its best enjoyments!—subjected to imaginary evils when it has no real ones to disturb it! and that can be made as effectually unhappy by its apprehensions of remote contingencies as if it was struggling with the pains of a present distress!
    Samuel Richardson (1689–1761)
