In Forgotten Realms
In the 3rd-Edition Forgotten Realms campaign setting the Demonweb Pits exists as a plane separate from the Abyss, due to the events of the War of the Spider Queen series. The Demonweb Pits is still a layer of the Abyss outside the Forgotten Realms cosmology.
This carries over into 4th edition, where the Demonweb Pits are located in the Astral Sea, along with the dominions of the other greater gods.

Famous quotes containing the words forgotten and/or realms:
“Victorious men of earth, no more
Proclaim how wide your empires are;
Though you bind in every shore
And your triumphs reach as far
As night or day,
Yet you, proud monarchs, must obey
And mingle with forgotten ashes, when
Death calls ye to the crowd of common men.”
—James Shirley (1596–1666)
“I shall be a benefactor if I conquer some realms from the night, if I report to the gazettes anything transpiring about us at that season worthy of their attention,—if I can show men that there is some beauty awake while they are asleep,—if I add to the domains of poetry.”
—Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
